Europe can be weird

This weekend the Eurovision song contest was held, in which european countries send artists who each sing one song and at the end there's a televoting to determine who wins. What I don't understand is that countries like Armenia or Azerbaijan also participate. Furthermore, most votes go to neighbouring countries, to such an extent that it doesn't have much to do with the quality of the performance anymore ( you're not allowed to vote for your own country). Well, this year Russia won, and as expected most ex-USSR countries gave it the most points.

Germany finished last (Ex Aequo with Poland and the UK) and I read in the paper they're thinking of sending Rammstein next year... or Tokio Hotel..whatever.

What I also think is weird, is that the artists don't have to come from the country they are representing, nor sing in the country's language. For example, in 1988 Celine Dion won for Switzerland... Ummm the link between Québec and Switzerland still boggles my mind...

Oh well, here's a girl who sang for Norway and didn't win, but man, what a voice:
